After School Program Leader

Southshire Community School is seeking an eager individual to serve as the After School Program Leader. The after-school program at Southshire Community School is designed to provide stimulating activities under adult supervision to a small group of children aged 5 to 13 years. This is a hands-on program in which the leader is expected to guide the children in directed play, creative activities, and outdoor time. Director of Community Engagement, Development and Operations

At Southshire Community School, we are seeking a director who believes that an inspired education begins with inspiring teachers and leaders.  The director plays a key role in advancing the school’s progressive educational mission and cultivating a deeply respectful, inclusive community.  The director works collaboratively and in conjunction with the Director of Teaching and Learning.

This position requires someone who is passionate about supporting independent learning, child development, collaboration, and whole-child education.  Our mission is to help children to become individuals with critical thinking skills, who value themselves and others as creative contributing members of a community, who see themselves as problem solvers, who love learning for its own sake, and who view learning as a lifelong process. 

Our 35-40 students range from K-8 and study within intentionally small, multi-grade classroom settings nestled within a multi-age learning community where an emergent curriculum is driven by the children’s interests and inquiries. Children at Southshire are supported in a culture of respect, progressing at their own pace and held to expectations of excellence.  We work in close connection with families to support each student’s goals.  The director serves as both a community and operations leader.   

The director will engage with the larger community through meetings, events, and partnerships that serve the needs of the Southshire community. Familiarity with child-centered learning environments and whole child education in a progressive educational setting is strongly desired.

Areas of responsibilities include: Community engagement and development; educational program support, standards compliance and best practices; human resources; student recruitment, enrollment & records; maintain and build, operational systems; maintain finances & accounting; after-school coordination; support fundraising, support board of directors.

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree required in education, communications, public relations, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Five (5) or more years of experience or training in public relations or community development and community engagement or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

  • Able to meet the requirements for the State of Vermont to pass a fingerprint-supported criminal record check, which is required and will be completed with results returning prior to the start of employment.

  • Must possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with a professional demeanor, and - be resourceful, organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work with multiple teams in a dynamic learning community that  is supported by family engagement and community partnerships. 

  • Adept with technology as it pertains to communicating, promoting, providing presentations, applying for grants, submitting compliance reports and submitting special education services billing.

  • Have the ability to support the school’s vision and mission to further guide and facilitate children’s interests, skills and capacities as critical thinkers, who value themselves and others as creative contributing members of a community, who see themselves as problem solvers, who love learning for its own sake, and who view learning as a lifelong process.

  • Must approach the work as a collaborative and cooperative team player alongside the teaching team, students, families and community partners.

  • Promote open communication, collaboratively solve problems 

Position Type:  Full-Time, exempt

Hourly/Salary: $60,000-$65,000/year
